camping

I was thinking of renting a car for a trip to the grand canyon in August and camping for one night. I was just wondering if anyone knows if there is somewhere in Las Vegas to buy a cheap tent so that I don%26#39;t need to bring one from the UK.

Any Walmart will have cheap tents and sleeping bags.

Bass Pro shop at the Silverton south of the strip may be worth a look too.

there are scorpions out at night in the desert. give camping some serious fore thought.

scorpions are not a big deal. I would be more worried about the heat. Please bring plenty of water with you.

I%26#39;m not a camper (shudder), but I%26#39;d bet (Las Vegas reference) that you%26#39;d have to pay a pretty penny to pitch a tent anywhere remotely scenic near the Grand Canyon. My DD and SIL camp all the time, and you have to make reservations wherever you go - you just can%26#39;t pull off to the side of the road and pitch a tent (someone correct me, but they are cheap and they DO make reservations when they go camping, there must be a reason for that).

I was planning on booking in at mather campground at the grand canyon but wanted to check on tents first. Thank you for your replys.

As mentioned before, Walmart will have decent, yet cheap tents and sleeping bags. Make sure you get a warm enough sleeping bag at least rated to 40 degrees. If you can%26#39;t find one, then also get a blanket. It can be chilly at the Grand Canyon.

Camping at Mather CG will be a great experience. You You can probably get in with even a days notice. Visit www.recreation.gov Price is $18 a night.

If you can not get into Mather, then there is a Forest Service campground just south of the park, called Ten-X. They do not take reservations and usually there are spots.

Make sure you have a flashlight, very dark at the rim. Few scorpions, just keep your tent closed and don%26#39;t leave food in the tent... squirrels etc will chew their way in!

Enjoy.

Another option might be to check out the prices of a small campervan (or VW Westpahlia) and rent it for a couple of days.

By the time you buy a tent, sleeping bags, pillows, air mattress - you may spend less for a small RV.

You can still stay at Mather, or next door in Trailer Village with full RV hookups.

Although I have not checked the prices at Bass Pro shop for camping gear, I think it will be more expensive (and presumably better quality) than the gear at WalMart. WalMart will have a better selection of the cheap (price and quality) stuff.

Big 5 is a sporting goods store chain in the U.S., with Vegas locations. You might want to check them out on-line. They sometimes have good sales prices.

But if you need serious camping gear, as opposed to the throw-away stuff you seem to be looking for, I would recommend REI (in Henderson). This place has all sorts of outdoor gear. www.rei.com

Mike45LC has it correct. For decent to expedition quality gear the place to go is REI. The REI in Henderson also rents camping gear. Check out their website...search for %26#39;rentals%26#39; and that will lead you to the Henderson store. I have not rented, but have heard that their rental equipment is %26#39;good%26#39;. REI prides itself on being the leader in outdoor equipment.

Have a great time at GC.
