Valley of Fire

We (2 Adults and 10 yr old boy)are renting a car for 1 day on Aug 18th and we hope to see the Valley of Fire - I am a bit concerned that it may be too hot to really get out of the car and walk around?

Also would like to see Lake Mead and Hoover Dam - How long including travelling time should a trip like this take?

Valley of Fire

It will be very hot, but you do not have to hike far to ';see'; everything the VOF has to offer - you can get wonderful views from driving around and just parking at all the different stopping points.

Valley of Fire

I agree. Although the best way to see VOF is to hike on some of the trails (some are short) you can just drive around and stop here and there for a closer look. Bring plenty of water and wear closed shoes- no sandals. Wear a hat, bring sunglasses and definitely put on suntan lotion. I have hiked there during the summer and it can be done if you are prepared.

How long the trip takes depends on what you plan to do at VOF and how long you are planning to stay at Hoover Dam(will you be taking the tour, for example?) and Lake Mead(any activities planned? Are you taking the paddle boat cruise?). It can take anywhere from a couple of hours to a full day.

You can see a LOT of Valley of Fire while sitting in the a/c car while driving so don%26#39;t worry about the heat. All of the hikes are 1/4 to 1 mile so just take along lots of water and you%26#39;ll be fine.

START your trip at Hoover Dam when it opens because traffic will only get worse all day long. Then venture north along the park road on the west side of Lake Mead up to Valley of Fire. Continue out the west side of the park and hit I-15 for an easy 45 drive at 70mph back into Vegas.

This trip will take 5-6 hours assuming you spend an hour at the Dam and about the same at VOF. Its a GREAT day trip away from the Vegas nonsense and your son will love it!
