I haven’t had time to write a full trip report yet from our visit to LAS last week (hope to have time soon). I just thought I would share an interesting interview that happened. As we waited for our delayed flight :( out of McCarren a Las Vegas tourist officer asked if he could spend 10 minutes with us and answer a few survey questions about the airport.
Most of the questions were general questions regarding the airport restaurants, restrooms, etc. He then asked about transportation to and from the airport. This time around we took the shuttle (yikes) to TI since we weren’t in a hurry and wanted to try it. The wait curbside was about 15 minutes and we were the second hotel dropped off so the trip wasn’t too bad. Last time (we told the official) I told the taxi driver no tunnel which he didn’t take but we still ended up on the freeway.
The tourist official mentioned that they are currently monitoring the taxi long haul. He and others are getting in taxis dressed in business attire and then ask the driver to take them to the Hilton. About 1/3 of the drivers are tunneling them. So if they do get tunneled official hits a pager button and the taxi authorities meet the driver at the Hilton and give him a fine.
He said if you do get tunneled don’t say anything until you are out of the cab with the bell hop nearby. Tell him you are only paying ½ the fare and if he doesn’t like it you will call the taxi authorities.
They are also requiring the shuttle buses to wait curbside only 15-20 minutes. They want the tourists to get to the hotel quickly (so that we can begin spending money).
