Grand Canyon

We would like to go to the Grand Canyon during our stay in Vegas, October, 2008. I am deciding whether to go with a tour, helicopter, or rent a car. We are traveling with my sister and brother in law, so that%26#39;ll be the four of us.

Any suggestions? Advice? Etc...?

Grand Canyon

Most people try to make the GC a one day trip from Vegas. I think this is a mistake. Plane and helicopter trips are costly($250+ pp), especially for four people. One day bus tours are brutally long, even driving by yourself is a LONG day. My criticism of all tours is that they give very little time at the Canyon, anywhere from 30 minutes to three hours. The GC is one of the most beautiful places on the face of the earth. It requires more than a quick day trip. I would urge you to rent a car and stay overnight. Seeing the Canyon at sunrise and sunset is well worth the effort. Also, you definately want to go to the South Rim. Many tours go to the West Rim, which is scenic, but hardly the beauty or grandeur of the South Rim.

With 4 people, driving may well be the cheapest option, and means you can spend as much or as little time as you want there. An overnight stay would be well worth it. We only had a day, and drove there in the morning, back in the evening. It was well worth the trip (270 miles, 4.5 hours each way), but an overnight would have been so much better.

I have driven in a day and stayed overnight. Overnight is awesome you feel special when all the day trippers go home and you get to see a very uncrowded sunrise. There and back in day is easilily doable but tiring and the drive is pretty dull (Hoover Dam excepted)

A visit to Grand Canyon from Las Vegas is best done as an overnight trip to GC National Park South Rim. Try to stay in the park http://www.grandcanyonlodges.com/ or at nearby Tusayan.

There are overnight tours by air from Las Vegas, but they are expensive. Here%26#39;s a link to one http://www.grandcanyontours.com/nightp.html

For four people, driving is much more economical. Along the way is the Route 66 town of Seligman which is a good place to stop. The Snow Cap Drive-In is a funky blast from the past. www.theroadwanderer.net/RT66seligman.htm

Be sure you go to Grand Canyon National Park. An area know as Grand Canyon West is heavily advertised in Las Vegas. It is not in the national park, doesn%26#39;t have the awesome scenery of the park and is expensive to visit. Many TA reviews of it are negative.

Make a reservation to eat at the El Tovar restauranat located at the main lodge. Excellent food for a reasonable price.

Wow, thank you all for the replies! I am impressed. Looks like I%26#39;ll try for an overnight stay.

Book your stay at the GCNP through Xanterra.com. If the website shows nothing available, then try calling them. Cancellations do happen all the time, but the info rarely makes it to the website. If there is still no place to stay inside the park, then settle for something in the town of Tusayan, just outside the park gate. Either way, the overnight stay will make for a much better trip and GC experience, AND it will save you money over an expensive one day flight trip.

Thank you, RedRox,

Your reply couldn%26#39;t have been more timely! That very thing occurred. No availability. I%26#39;ll have to call.
